Varsity Forge: The Factory Behind America's Heritage Varsity Jacket
Most varsity jacket brands you've bought from have never seen their own factory floor. They design a jacket, hand it to a sourcing agent, the sourcing agent hands it to a subcontractor, and somewhere in that chain — usually three or four layers deep — an actual person cuts the wool, stitches the leather sleeves, and presses the chainstitch embroidery. By the time the jacket reaches you, its price has absorbed every markup in that chain, and its quality has absorbed every gap in that chain's communication. Varsity Forge exists because we skipped the chain entirely. We are the factory. Not a brand that partners with one — the manufacturing floor itself, selling directly to you.
Built on a Manufacturing Tradition, Not a Marketing Concept
Varsity Forge was founded from inside a working leather and sportswear manufacturing operation in Sialkot, Pakistan — a region with 100+ years of combined production experience and an internationally recognized reputation as one of the world's leading hubs for leather goods and sports apparel manufacturing. Sialkot's workshops have outfitted athletic and leather goods brands globally for decades, and that same infrastructure — skilled leather cutters, wool tailoring specialists, and chainstitch embroidery machinists — is what produces every Varsity Forge jacket. We didn't start as a store looking for a supplier. We started as the supplier, and built the store around it.
The Factory-Direct Advantage: How the Model Actually Works
A typical varsity jacket brand runs through four to six layers before it reaches you: design house, sourcing agent, contract factory, importer, wholesaler, retailer. Each layer adds margin — commonly a 4-8x markup between factory cost and shelf price — and each layer adds distance between the brand and the actual production floor, which is where quality control problems get missed. Varsity Forge removes every layer between those two points. We design, cut, sew, and quality-check in the same facility, then ship directly to your door.
That structure changes three things you can actually feel:
- Price — you pay for craftsmanship and material, not five intermediaries' margins.
- Quality control — every jacket is inspected by the same team that cut and stitched it, not a third-party QA firm working off a spec sheet.
- Communication — when you request a custom detail or flag a sizing issue, you're talking to the people who can actually change the production line, not a customer service rep relaying a message overseas.
Craftsmanship & Construction Standards
Heritage American varsity construction has specific technical requirements, and we build to them rather than approximating them:
- Body and sleeve construction — wool melton bodies paired with full-grain leather sleeves, the traditional two-material construction that separates an authentic varsity jacket from a uniform sweatshirt with buttons.
- Chainstitch embroidery — letters, numbers, and patches are done in traditional chainstitch, the raised, textured stitch method used on original collegiate varsity jackets, rather than flat machine embroidery.
- Hardware — snap-button closures on classic styles for durability under repeated use, with heavy-duty snap components rated for long-term wear rather than lightweight fashion-grade snaps.
- Lining — quilted 100 GSM polyfill, satin, or twill lining depending on collection, chosen for structure retention and comfort against outer layers.
- Ribbing — knit ribbing at the collar, cuffs, and waistband, tensioned to hold shape after repeated wear rather than stretching out within months.
Every jacket passes through four checkpoints before it ships: cutting accuracy, stitch and seam integrity, embroidery alignment, and a final full-garment inspection against the original spec. Jackets that don't pass inspection don't ship — they're corrected or rejected on the floor, not sent out and handled through a returns process.
Our Promise
Varsity Forge exists to prove that heritage craftsmanship and honest, direct pricing aren't mutually exclusive. We're not chasing trend cycles or disposable fashion — we're building the kind of varsity jacket that's constructed to be worn for years, priced the way it would be if you could buy it straight from the people who made it. Because you can.
